My friend has a backyard office that does not have a deadbolt. She wanted to feel more secure when working especially after dark, so I got this deadbolt for her. She only wanted it for when she's in the office and didn't care about locking and unlocking from outside. So I installed it without the cylinder and key. That made for super simple installation and did not put a hole in the door. I feel like the cylinder is the most vulnerable part of this lock anyway, and it's more secure without it. The important thing with a surface mounted deadbolt is that you use good, long hardened steel screws into the door frame, not just the trim. The lock itself isn't the weak point. The weak point is the attachment to the door and frame.So how do I feel about this deadbolt? The deadbolt itself is great. Very solid, and easy to open and close the lock. The screws provided are NOT adequate for solid mounting. You need longer and stronger screws. Why is it that when the screws are so integral to the performance of the product, they still give you crappy screws? I'll never understand that, but it has become the norm. The cylinder does look like the weakest part, and you'll need to decide if you want to use it. But it seems to turn smoothly, it looks like it would be easy enough to install, and they supplied 3 keys, which is nice. So, while it has some weaknesses, it was good for my purpose, and good security for the price.
