Why Your Door Knob Feels Loose—and How to Fix It
A loose or wobbly door knob is a common issue—and most of the time, it’s easy to fix.
Here’s what causes it and how to tighten or replace it.
1. Loose or Stripped Mounting Screws
This is the #1 reason for a wobbly knob.
✔ Solution:
Tighten screws on both sides of the rosette.
If they don’t tighten, the screw holes may be stripped → consider replacement.
2. Internal Spindle Wear
The spindle connects the two sides of the knob.
Over time, it can become worn or bent.
✔ Solution:
Replace the spindle or install a new knob set.
3. Misaligned Door Latch
If the latch doesn’t sit correctly, the knob may feel loose.
✔ Solution:
Adjust door alignment or strike plate.
4. Aging or Low-Quality Hardware
Cheap hardware loosens faster because components wear out.
✔ Solution:
Upgrade to higher-quality, solid-metal designs.
5. When You Should Replace Instead of Repair
✔ If tightening doesn’t fix wobbling
✔ If latch sticks frequently
✔ If finish is peeling
✔ If internal parts grind
